Freeware: This program is free software
If you think your computer is infected with malware (adware, spyware and other harmful wares), the recommendation is to test first other more user-friendly anti-spyware tools, such as SUPERAntiSpyware or Spybot Search and Destroy. These are good enough in order to remove a serious malware infection, and it’s wise to also keep them installed on your computer to prevent further infections.
However, when all else fails and you still have a serious problem, you can resort to a tool such as Combofix. This is a very powerful program so it’s intended for users that know what they’re doing, or at least some that know where to request help. The interface is not user friendly at all (but geeks will love it since it has the old NC command line style) and you’ll need to have Windows Recovery Console installed too.
ComboFix is an anti-spyware tool created by sUBs that helps you in two ways: first, it will scan your computer and try to remove the infections automatically, second it will create a report that advanced users will be able to look through and let you know if you got rid of spyware or not (more or less what HijackThis does).
ComboFix can be installed currently on these operating systems: Windows XP (32-bit only), Windows 2000 (32-bit only), Windows Vista (32-bit/64-bit) and Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit). When you run ComboFix, in order to speed the scanning process it will delete the files from Windows Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and files stored in the Temp folder, so just make sure you close the other programs when running it (for instance Outlook and Groove store temporary files that are needed, so you might get some errors if you run ComboFix).
These are the steps that you need to do to have ComboFix clean your computer:
- First of all you have to install ComboFix
- After it’s installed, you’ll see a command-like program window
- During the first run, you’ll be prompted to install the Windows Recovery Console (if it’s not already installed)
- ComboFix runs after you press a key and it will go through a set of stages (up to 50 stages) during which it deletes what seems suspicious
- When ComboFix finishes running it will save a log file and you can use that to see if your computer was cleaned
ComboFix is definitely a powerful tool against spyware, but be aware of the fact that you’ll need some help in order to understand what actions you need to take (if any) to finish cleaning up your computer.
ComboFix video guide:
ComboFix is developed by sUBs and is designed to cleanup malware infections and restore settings modified by malware. ComboFix is an executable software, intended for users with advanced computer skills to run it only on occasions where a regular antivirus would not detect certain malware, or where an antivirus cannot update or otherwise function. This cleaning utility self runs itself and scans your entire system, including more notable areas such as the registry and the system root files, where most prevalent malware are most likely to hide. Furthermore, ComboFix also displays a report of malware that were not able to be removed. The report is accepted by many forums, where experienced users analyze them and advise users further steps of action. Features:
- Integrates NirCmd, a command-line tool.
- Can unhook any .dll file in the system32 folder.
- Command-line which allows users to delete up to 8 files at a time
- It can often run on systems where few Antimalware programs can run because the malware will delete them.
